Getting married is one of the biggest things you will ever do. If you are approaching it with faith at the centre of your relationship, you probably want the preparation to reflect that. Christian premarital counselling in Melbourne offers couples a space to do exactly that.
Whether your church requires premarital preparation or you are simply choosing to invest in your marriage before it begins, having proper support during this season makes a real difference.
Christian premarital counselling is a series of sessions designed to help couples prepare for marriage in a way that is informed by their faith. It is not just ticking a box. It is about going into your marriage with eyes open, having had the conversations that a lot of couples skip because they are too uncomfortable or too close to the wedding.
In Melbourne, I offer faith-informed premarital counselling from my rooms in Essendon North and Carlton, as well as online for couples across Victoria. I work with couples from Christian backgrounds who want a therapist who understands the values and context they are coming from.
Every couple is different, and the sessions are tailored to what you actually need. But some of the areas that come up most often in Christian premarital counselling include:
• Communication: How you talk to each other, especially when things are hard. How you handle disagreement without shutting down or escalating.
• Roles and expectations: What you each believe about roles in marriage, and whether those beliefs are actually aligned. This is especially important for couples who have thought about this through a faith lens.
• Family of origin: The patterns and expectations you each bring from your families, and how those will shape your home together.
• Money: How you approach finances, spending, saving, and generosity. Money is one of the leading sources of conflict in marriages and worth talking through before it becomes a problem.
• Intimacy: Physical and emotional closeness, and what you each expect and hope for in your marriage.
• Faith and practice: How you want faith to shape your home, your routines, and your decisions. This matters particularly for couples from different churches or different levels of practice.
• Conflict and repair: How you will handle it when things go wrong, which they will, because that is part of any real relationship.
These are not easy conversations, but they are much easier to have before the wedding than after it.
Some couples come because their church asks them to. Others come because they have seen what happens when couples rush into marriage without proper preparation and they do not want that for themselves. Some come because they have already had some tough conversations and they want support navigating them.
For a lot of Christian couples, the idea of preparing well for marriage is something that resonates deeply. You would prepare for most other significant things in life. Marriage deserves at least as much thought.
I also see multicultural and intercultural Christian couples in Melbourne who are navigating not just faith but different cultural backgrounds, different family expectations, and sometimes different expressions of Christianity. That adds layers, and it is worth having space to work through them.
Something worth saying clearly: faith-informed counselling is not about telling you what the right answer is, or what your marriage must look like. It is about working through things with someone who understands the framework you are coming from and respects it.
I do not impose a particular theology on our sessions. I work with couples from across the Christian tradition, from more charismatic and Pentecostal backgrounds to more traditional and liturgical ones. The goal is to help you and your partner have the real conversations, not to give you a one-size-fits-all model.
Most couples doing premarital counselling in Melbourne work with me for between four and eight sessions. Some do more if there are particular areas they want to spend more time on. The sessions can be spaced out to fit around your engagement season and wedding planning.
I offer sessions in Essendon North and Carlton, as well as online across Melbourne and Victoria. If you are in a regional area or one of you is interstate or overseas, online counselling works well too.
I work alongside local Melbourne churches and pastors who want their engaged couples to receive professional premarital support alongside the pastoral care the church provides. If you are a pastor or leader looking for someone you can refer couples to, I am happy to have that conversation.
If you are engaged or planning to get engaged and you want to prepare well for your marriage, I would love to work with you. Christian premarital counselling in Melbourne is something I am genuinely passionate about, because I have seen what a difference good preparation makes.
You can book a session online at our Essendon North or Carlton rooms, or online across Melbourne and Victoria.
If you’d like to ask a few questions first, a free fifteen minute consultation is also available.
